r:ead #1(2012) and r:ead #2(2013) took place in Tokyo, as one of the “Programs to Create International Points for the Promotion of Arts and Culture”, supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs Government of Japan, organized by The NPO Arts Network Japan.
r:ead #3 will be organized by Tainan National University of the Arts, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Education in Taiwan.
Jow-Jiun Gong (Professor at Tainan National University of the Arts) will direct and conduct the program with Chiaki Soma as a co-director and other 4 staff members both from Taiwan and Japan working as a team.

r:ead #3 will be an intensive two-week program, different from two previous ones that were held in two terms (dialogue and research period & creation period).

Staff Profiles

Jow-Jiun Gong
Director / Taiwan

Born 1966 in Chayi, Taiwan. In 1998, Gong graduated from the Department of Philosophy of the National Taiwan University with his dissertation Dialectics between Body and Imagination: Nietzsche, Husserl, Merleau Ponty. After teaching positions at several universities in Taiwan, in 2007, he was appointed associate professor and director of the doctoral program in art creation and theory at the Tainan University of the Arts. From 2009, he also organized the quarterly art magazine Art Critique in Taiwan (ACT), as chief editor and chairman and established it as a public journal. One year later, in 2010, ACT won the Prize of National Publication as Outstanding Cultural Magazine.

Gong is also acclaimed as Chinese translator of writings by Gaston Bachelard, Maurice Merlau-Ponty and Carl Gustav Jung into Chinese.

Besides his research, Gong is engaging with curatorial activities. In 2013, he curated the exhibition Are We Working too Much? at the Eslite Gallery, Taipei. Related to the exhibition, he published two books, Are We Working too Much? I: Workbook, Are We Working too Much? II: Field Narratives. In that same year, he was appointed dean of the College of Visual Art of the Tainan National University of the Arts.

Chiaki Soma
Co-Director / Japan

Directed all the programs in FESTIVAL/TOKYO, the biggest theatre arts festival in Japan, as the first program director from 2009 to 2013. Established and directed the Yokohama Arts Platform: Steep Slope Studio from 2006 to 2010. Directing r:ead (Residency East Asia Dialogue) since 2012.
Not only producing, curating or directing various events and programs both domestic and overseas, she has been involved in a number of cultural policies and art institutions as a judge or a board member, including the Cultural Policies Committee at the Council for Cultural Affairs. B.A. in Waseda University, M.A. in the University of Lyon.

Kanoko Tamura
Assistant Director / Japan

Born in Tokyo, 1985. Graduated with B.S. in Civil Engineering and Architecture from Tufts University in 2008. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Inter Media Art Dept. in 2013.
Work as a freelance art producer, coordinator, interpreter and translator, aiming to develop the potentialities of language, translation and editing in the field of contemporary art.

Suhne Cho
Assistant Director / Japan

Born in Tokyo, 1986. Studied at Graduate School of Art at Seoul University in 2013. Now studying at Graduate School of Inter Media Art at Tokyo University of the Arts.
While conducting a research on Post-colonial/Diaspora Art in East Asian countries, she also organizes various events and interviews to reconsider historical and political aspects of art.
Have been working as an assistant director of r:ead(Residence East-Asia Dialogue) since 2014.

Lin Juliet Ya-Wen
Assistant Director / Taiwan

2002 Graduated at Commercial Design Dept. of Eternal-Life Christ College& Nursing Dept. of Meiho University.
2004 Administration Executive in The Sin Pin Pier─Absolutely Art Space, Kaohsiung. And participate in curating over 100 times.
2008 Wandered about in US for one year, Indepth exploration of Alternative Art Space.
